 es Zoo is not just an "animal holding facility\," as the zoo's genius comm
 unications director once described it\; it is also a botanical garden with
  trees from various parts of the world throughout the zoo. One of the tree
 s is the acacia from Africa\, which happens to be a primary food source fo
 r wild giraffes. But one place the tree is not present at the zoo is in th
 e giraffe enclosure\, where there are no plants of any type. According to 
 Born Free USA\, "Giraffes spend a large part of their day feeding on leave
 s and stems of trees and shrubs\, and rumination is their dominant activit
 y at night. As such\, feeding is not just of nutritional importance to the
 m but also behaviourally significant." As seen in the photo\, the giraffes
 ' tiny space is lifeless and as\n\nbarren as a small horse corral.\n\nAbou
 t giraffe roaming requirements in the wild\, Born Free USA has this to say
 : "Giraffes would naturally spend around a third of their day walking. The
 ir natural range has been calculated to be between 1\,326 and 127\,012 acr
 es. In contrast\, the average zoo enclosure for giraffes in US zoos is 1.2
  acres. The smallest giraffe enclosure in the country is just 0.17 acres a
 nd is found at the Los Angeles Zoo."\n\nSo why is the LA Zoo holding giraf
 fes so clearly to their detriment? What could the zoo's local conservation
  efforts have to do with a species on the other side of the world? Nothing
 . The poor giraffes in the zoo are there because they sell tickets.\n\nJoi
