ZOO PROTEST

Next demo SUNDAY, Aug. 30 from 10 to 12 noon Nothing to do, nowhere to go, no one to talk to. Zoo life is no life for any animal but it's particularly devastating for elephants. Meant to roam vast spaces in the company of matriarchical herds or bachelor groups, elephants have long life spans similar to humans. Imagine being an elephant like Billy who, captive from the age of one, spent four long decades in small enclosures all alone at the Los Angeles Zoo. Seeing the harm being inflicted on Billy as well as the other elephants being helded at the LA Zoo, elephant experts and advocats and animal rights activists started campaigning for his release to sanctuary beginning with a concerned childrens' group in 1998. Only one elephant, Ruby, made it to sanctuary. The others were either unalived or, in the case of Billy and Tina as the last survivors, were moved to the bleak Tulsa Zoo. Our city-owned zoo has repeatedly, throughout the decades, demonstrated it does not care about the physical or mental welfare of elephants. The zoo's elephant exhibit is now "on pause", according to the zoo. Let's make damn sure the zoo hears loud and clear our demand that it changes the pause to a permanent closure of its elephant prison. Join us!
