136 Sanctuaries Just Took an Historic Stand Against the Industry That Kills Animals

The Women’s Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in the 1860s to rescue abused carriage horses in Philadelphia. Over 150 years later, sanctuaries have become a vital lifeline for neglected and abused animals across the US. Unlike zoos, sanctuaries focus on providing a compassionate home for animals in need, with Farm Sanctuary leading the way in farm animal protection since 1986.

To honor the lifesaving work of sanctuaries worldwide, the first global Sanctuary Day will take place on April 17. More than 130 sanctuaries are set to participate, hosting events and gatherings to raise awareness about the rights and dignity of farm animals. The growth of the sanctuary movement reflects a collective commitment to building a kinder world for all animals, fueled by compassion and respect.
