A US Senator Just Sponsored The ‘Plant-Powered School Meals Pilot Act’

US Senator Adam B. Schiff has sponsored the Plant-Powered School Meals Pilot Act, which aims to provide entirely plant-based food and milk options for children in American schools. The proposed act includes federal funding of USD $10 million, along with an additional $2 million for non-dairy milk reimbursement. The bill's primary goals are to serve eligible children, collaborate with various partners, provide educational activities related to plant-based foods, and incorporate organic plant-based options in schools.

The Plant-Powered School Meals Pilot Act has also gained sponsorship from other Senators such as Angela Alsobrooks, Alex Padilla, and Cory Booker. This comes after the US Senate recently passed a bill to improve children's access to plant-based milk in schools and public support for plant-based options in schools is high. Research shows that well-balanced plant-based diets can meet nutritional requirements, support healthy growth in children, and provide cardiometabolic benefits. Lead author Dr. Monica Dinu highlighted the benefits of food fortification in plant-based diets in supporting children's growth and heart health.
