Activist Experiences ‘Muscle Wastage’ After 10 Days Inside Farrowing Crate

Animal Rising campaigner Michelle Farnham has spent three weeks inside a pig farrowing crate in Trafalgar Square, London, to raise awareness of the oppressive conditions experienced by farm animals in the UK. After 10 days in the cramped cage, she began to experience "muscle wastage" and physical deterioration, highlighting the extreme confinement that female pigs endure in factory farming.

Farnham's protest is part of Animal Rising's End Factory Farming campaign, calling for the government to commit to ending factory farming by 2040. The group also released footage of Luna, a sow inside a farm in Ipswich, to showcase the suffering caused by farrowing crates. With roughly 92 percent of indoor pig farming systems using these cages, Animal Rising is aiming to end the inhumane treatment of animals in the industry.
