AMSilk Locks In Dedicated Production Line With Ajinomoto Foods Europe

AMSilk has secured a long-term manufacturing and supply agreement with Ajinomoto Foods Europe (AFE) to transition its silk protein production from industrial validation to large-scale manufacturing. AMSilk, based in Germany, uses precision fermentation to develop silk proteins as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials, serving industries such as textiles, automotive, and medical sectors. The collaboration with AFE, beginning in 2023, now includes the construction of a dedicated production line in Nesle, France, expected to reach commercial volumes of industrial-grade silk protein.

The expansion demonstrates AFE's capabilities as a trusted contract-manufacturing partner in biotechnology, leveraging their industrial infrastructure and expertise in precision fermentation to efficiently scale AMSilk's silk proteins. The joint investment covers equipment, installation, and facility upgrades to create a purpose-built manufacturing environment for AMSilk's proprietary process. In addition to AFE, AMSilk has also partnered with Evonik and 21st.BIO to scale silk protein output across multiple production sites, with CEO Christian Wichert emphasizing the importance of scaling production capabilities for sustainable commercial growth.
