AMSilk Silk Protein Yarns Appear in Balenciaga Couture Gown at Paris Show

Balenciaga has showcased a couture gown using bioengineered silk protein material from AMSilk in its 55th Couture Collection, marking Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s debut presentation for the brand. This collaboration follows the incorporation of AMSilk's yarns in Balenciaga's Spring 2026 ready-to-wear collection, which included a white collared shirt and a black shirtdress sold in stores and online. AMSilk produces its silk proteins through precision fermentation, creating yarns that are biodegradable, free of microplastics, and compatible with standard textile processes.

The material is made from spider silk-based protein structures that are converted into wet-spun filaments. AMSilk is expanding its production capacity through a partnership with Ajinomoto Foods Europe to enable industrial-scale manufacturing of silk proteins. Ulrich Scherbel, COO of Premium Filaments at AMSilk, highlighted the collaboration with Balenciaga as a significant milestone, demonstrating the growing potential of biotechnology-enabled materials in luxury fashion. This partnership showcases the innovative use of sustainable materials in haute couture and represents a key validation of AMSilk's technology.
