Another UMass Chan Animal Experimenter Caught Breaking the Rules
PETA • Aug 13, 2026
Jin Zhang, a researcher at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, was caught violating numerous animal welfare rules, leading to her suspension from experiments and a one-year ban from handling animals. Zhang's experiments on mice involved cutting into them, injecting viruses into their brains, and implanting devices, among other cruel practices. This is not the first incident at UMass Chan, as Zhang is the eighth experimenter exposed by PETA for breaking animal welfare rules at the school.
Despite multiple infractions and a corrective-action plan, Zhang's lab continued to conduct inhumane experiments on animals without proper approval. The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee suspended Zhang's experiments, revoked her lab access, and enforced a one-year ban on her working with animals. PETA is urging UMass Chan to end animal experimentation and transition to more humane and effective research methods.
