The paper argues that attention should shift from consumer-facing plant-based brands to the underlying technologies that drive the wider food system transition, such as precision fermentation, cellular agriculture, and molecular farming. The document positions these production technologies as key areas for infrastructure investment, emphasizing the potential for shared biomanufacturing capacity and platform-level science to have a greater long-term commercial impact than branded product launches.

The paper frames food system transformation as an economic opportunity, citing the global animal protein industry's value at $1.9 trillion and estimating a $190 billion addressable market with a 10% shift towards alternative proteins. It identifies five investment domains as commercially relevant, including platform technologies, ingredient platforms, shared manufacturing infrastructure, regionalized production models, and cross-sector applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and bio-based materials. Regulatory fragmentation and capacity bottlenecks are identified as key challenges that need to be addressed for the alternative food ingredient sector to reach cost parity with conventional equivalents and scale effectively.
