Bioengineered Silk Enters Luxury Retail as Balenciaga Launches AMSilk-Based Garments

Luxury fashion brand Balenciaga has introduced garments made with AMSilk’s bioengineered silk protein yarns in its Spring 2026 collection. The white collared shirt and black shirtdress are now available in stores and online, marking the first time AMSilk’s material has been used in commercially available fashion products. The bioengineered silk, produced through microbial fermentation in Germany, replicates spider silk DNA to create yarn with texture and appearance similar to traditional silk.

The partnership between AMSilk and Balenciaga showcases the readiness of bioengineered materials for real market adoption, with the garments designed to perform like conventional silk while offering enhanced properties such as elasticity and wrinkle resistance. The material is also certified microplastic-free, fully biodegradable, and vegan, with production processes that use significantly less water and generate fewer CO₂ emissions compared to traditional silk manufacturing. This collaboration represents a shift towards broader application of bioengineered silk in fashion manufacturing, reflecting ongoing efforts within the industry to explore alternatives to conventionally sourced silk.
