Biosphere Adds CO2-to-Protein Technology With NovoNutrients Deal

California-based biomanufacturing company Biosphere has acquired NovoNutrients, a firm specializing in converting industrial CO2 and hydrogen into single-cell protein through gas fermentation. NovoNutrients has developed a unique loop reactor system to address scaling issues in gas-to-liquid mass transfer, making it a key player in the CO2-to-protein market. The technology has been validated from lab scale to commercial reactors, with a focus on producing protein for food and feed applications.

Biosphere, known for its innovative reactor designs that replace traditional sterilization systems with UV-based processes, sees potential in integrating NovoNutrients’ gas fermentation expertise into its manufacturing platform. This acquisition allows Biosphere to expand its capabilities in gas fermentation and high-intensity aerobic fermentation, with plans to explore industrial and commercial bioproduction beyond food. With NovoNutrients’ focus on aquaculture and animal feed markets, the acquisition brings valuable CO2 conversion expertise and microbial strains to Biosphere for further development in bioprocessing technologies.
