This law, which was recently passed by the Chamber of Deputies and sanctioned by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, prohibits the use of live, vertebrate animals for testing cosmetic products and ingredients. This groundbreaking legislation comes after a decade-long campaign by Humane World for Animals in Brazil.

While some states in Brazil had previously restricted animal testing, this federal law marks the first time the country has introduced legislation on a national level. The new law provides a two-year grace period to establish cruelty-free labeling and implement alternative testing methods more widely. These alternative methods, such as the recently approved monocyte activation test, offer ethical alternatives to the invasive and outdated rabbit pyrogenicity test.
