British Judge Opens Door to Legal Action Against Broiler Chicken Breeders

A British judge recently dismissed an animal protection legal challenge but stated that farming animals that suffer due to their genes is unlawful. This decision opens the door for private prosecutions to be initiated against broiler chicken breeders who have genetically modified the birds to the extreme of causing significant animal welfare problems. The judge emphasized that if a breed of animal is expected to suffer due to its genetic makeup, the prohibition on keeping that breed applies, regardless of any commercial advantages.

The ruling was brought forth by the Humane League UK, with support from the RSPCA, to address the suffering of broiler chickens. The organisations have been pushing for the end of using genetically modified chickens in factory farming, referring to them as "Frankenchickens". They believe that working towards promoting veganism as a solution is vital to protect not only broiler chickens but also other factory-farmed animals like pigs and cows.
