Brittany Ferries ends live animal transport following NGO pressure

Brittany Ferries has announced that it will cease transporting live farmed animals from Ireland to France by September 2026 at the latest, following pressure from animal protection organizations. This decision comes after over a year of campaigning by various NGOs, including Compassion in World Farming and FOUR PAWS, to end the controversial practice. The ferry operator had resumed the transport of live animals in March 2025, leading to outcry from animal welfare advocates due to the harsh conditions endured by the animals during the lengthy journey.

The move is seen as a significant victory for animal rights and highlights the impact of mobilizing NGOs and citizens in advocating for change. With Brittany Ferries discontinuing the trade, Irish Ferries remains the sole operator transporting live animals from Ireland to France. Animal protection organizations are urging EU policy-makers to enact stricter regulations, including banning the transport of unweaned animals over long distances and promoting a trade in meat and carcasses instead of live animals.
