Canada’s Foodtech Report: Is Canada Ready to Compete in the Global Foodtech Race?

The Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN) has released its Foodtech in Canada 2025 Ecosystem Report, revealing that Canada's agrifoodtech sector has attracted $4.1 billion CAD in investment over the past decade, with $2.3 billion CAD directed towards food technology projects. Despite this growth, venture capital investment in Canadian foodtech lags behind other countries, with government grants playing a larger role in funding rounds. The plant-based food sector, food waste solutions, and biotech sector are identified as key strengths within the Canadian foodtech ecosystem.

However, challenges such as securing later-stage investment, labour shortages, and supply chain disruptions pose obstacles to industry growth. Canadian foodtech startups struggle to compete with the size of funding rounds in the US and UK, and the industry faces difficulties in finding skilled labour due to demographic factors and immigration restrictions. To address these challenges and further enhance Canada's position in the global foodtech race, the industry must focus on finding solutions and continuing to drive transformative innovations in the sector.
