Canada’s No Meat Factory Closes US Plant-Based Facility, Laying Off Over 120 Workers

Canadian plant-based meat startup No Meat Factory has closed its $19M facility in Stanwood, US, resulting in the layoff of 123 employees. This move leaves its British Columbia location as the company's only production hub in response to the contraction of the North American plant-based market, which has brought challenges such as product rationalization, workforce cutbacks, and manufacturing shifts.

No Meat Factory, founded in 2019, produces a variety of meat alternatives for B2B partners and had recently closed a $42M Series B funding round. The closure of its US plant reflects the tough landscape for plant-based meat in the country, with declining sales and investment leading to consolidation and layoffs across the industry, including other companies like Beyond Meat and Meati Foods. The trend is not limited to the US, as global players like Nestlé have also made cutbacks in response to slowing demand for plant-based products.
