Chris Packham ‘Immensely Proud’ As He’s Named RSPCA President

Chris Packham, the well-known naturalist and media personality, has been appointed as the president of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) during a critical moment in the charity's history as it approaches its 200th anniversary. Packham highlighted the challenges that modern society poses for animals, such as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, cost of living crisis, and neglect on the rise as people struggle to manage costs.

Packham emphasized the connection between animal welfare and human well-being, stating that what is good for animals is ultimately good for us. He pointed out that the mistreatment of animals often leads to infectious diseases, pandemics, and climate crisis. Established in 1824, the RSPCA focuses on animal rescue and promoting animal welfare, but has faced criticism for not doing enough to ensure high standards in its "RSPCA Assured" labeled farms, leading some to call for a promotion of a plant-based food system instead.
