City of l’Alcúdia Makes History by Replacing Horse-Drawn Carriages with Electric Vehicles

The Mallorcan municipality of l’Alcúdia has made history by becoming the first municipality in Spain to replace horse-drawn carriages with a fleet of electric vehicles. The project began in 2023 and is now a reality with eight out of the ten carriages already being electric. The cost of conversion, including batteries and carriages, amounts to about 30,000 euros per vehicle.

The official presentation of the new vehicles was attended by various ministry representatives and the Association of Carriage Drivers of l’Alcúdia. The mayor of l’Alcúdia highlighted that this transition represents a step towards a more sustainable future with zero emissions and less noise. The decision to replace horse-drawn carriages with electric vehicles positions l’Alcúdia as a state benchmark in the elimination of using animals in tourist transport and instead opting for electric alternatives that respect all sentient beings and the environment.
