Composting Is Becoming Mandatory In NYC – Here’s What You Need To Know

Mayor Eric Adams has announced that composting will become mandatory in all five boroughs of New York City in the coming year. Despite concerns about urban apartment living and potential rat problems, composting has already begun successfully in parts of Brooklyn and Queens, surpassing expectations.

Composting involves separating organic food scraps from non-degradable items like plastic and glass. Residents can use small kitchen bins to collect scraps before disposing of them in designated compost bins or through curbside pickup. New York City plans to implement citywide composting pickup, with Queens leading the way in diverting millions of pounds of material in its first season.
