Detroit Gets Its First Black-Owned Vegan Bakery

Estella’s Vegan Dessert Boutique is set to open in Detroit this October, becoming the city's first Black-owned vegan bakery. Founded by Chantele Jones in honor of her grandmother Estella, the bakery will specialize in Southern-inspired vegan pastries and desserts. Jones, who learned to bake from her grandmother and mother, aims to share her family's cooking heritage with the community through her business.

The bakery will offer a variety of plant-based treats, including pound cake, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, banana pudding, and pecan pie. In addition to traditional favorites, Estella’s Vegan Dessert Boutique plans to feature seasonal items and support local farms. Jones, who follows a vegan diet due to health reasons, also runs Estella’s Vegan Cuisine, offering catering, group cooking classes, and plant-based pop-ups. Guests can look forward to ordering a variety of vegan cakes, muffins, cookies, and Jones's cookbook through local delivery or nationwide shipping.
