Did COP30 Fail Animals And The Food System?

The British charity World Animal Protection has criticized COP30 for failing to address the impact of industrial animal agriculture on the climate crisis and food system. Held in Belém, Brazil, the conference overlooked the role of cattle ranching, the main cause of deforestation in the Amazon region. Animal agriculture is identified as the leading global contributor to climate change, surpassing even fossil fuel emissions.

While COP30 did emphasize the social aspect of climate action, the lack of focus on animal welfare and the presence of over 300 industrial agriculture lobbyists at the conference suggests that more needs to be done. World Animal Protection is calling for a transition away from destructive industrial agriculture towards equitable, humane, and sustainable farming practices in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect both animals and the environment.
