Dutch Parliament Votes to Fold Plant-Based Action Plan Into Nitrogen and Food Policy

The Dutch House of Representatives voted to include a proposed Action Plan for More Plant-Based Food into the upcoming nitrogen package and national food strategy. The motion, tabled by Christine Teunissen of the Party for the Animals, highlights the potential of Dutch farmers and horticulturists in growing plant-based crops and the support from various sectors for the plan. The government responded positively to the motion, indicating a willingness to consider the proposal.

The coalition behind the plan, which includes over 60 organizations, is requesting a public Plant-Based Acceleration Fund of €65 million per year for eight years. The plan focuses on demand, support for growers, public procurement, research, innovation, and exports, aiming to shift protein production and consumption towards a plant-based food system. By linking the proposal to the government's nitrogen and food strategy policies, the coalition hopes to increase the chances of its implementation and overall success.
