Enifer Partners With FS to Produce Mycoproteins in Brazil from Corn Ethanol Sidestreams

Vegconomist • Jun 04, 2025
Finnish mycoprotein company Enifer has partnered with Brazilian ethanol producer FS to bring its PEKILO® fermentation technology to Latin America for the first time. FS will construct an industrial process at a pilot scale to produce approximately 500 tonnes of PEKILO®Pet and PEKILO®Aqua annually, using corn ethanol-derived thin stillage as feedstock. The project is supported by the Mais Inovação Brasil program and aims to produce up to 10,000 tonnes of mycoproteins annually for the pet food and aquaculture industries in Brazil and other Latin American countries.

In addition to the expansion in Brazil, Enifer is finalizing the construction of its first full-scale PEKILO® production facility in Finland. The company has also applied for regulatory approval from the European Food Safety Authority to sell PEKILO® in the EU. With a lower carbon footprint compared to other pet food ingredients, the PEKILO® fermentation technology has demonstrated flexibility and robustness in utilizing a variety of raw materials and industrial settings, showcasing its potential for sustainable innovation in the food industry.
