The European Parliament's agriculture committee has voted to ban the use of terms like 'burgers' and 'sausages' on vegan alternatives in a move towards an EU-wide ban. This decision comes after a five-year debate on the issue, with the proposal aiming to reserve meat-related terms exclusively for animal products.

Despite no evidence of consumer confusion, the committee voted in favor of the ban with the aim of strengthening farmers' position in the food supply chain. The move has raised concerns about the possible negative impact on farmers producing raw materials for plant-based products and hindering consumer transparency with unknown names. The proposal now moves towards a vote with all Members of the European Parliament, with a significant chance of passing given the more conservative makeup of the current Parliament.
