The European Commission has released findings from an EU-wide consultation for Food 2040, the research and innovation agenda succeeding Food 2030. Protein diversification and scaling up plant-based protein production were highlighted as key priorities identified by stakeholders. Improved human health through healthier dietary habits and reduced environmental impact were also significant priorities, alongside resilience and strategic autonomy.
The consultation identified protein diversification, particularly plant-based proteins, as a crucial focus area for EU research and innovation priorities. Stakeholders highlighted the need for clearer terminology around nutrition and sustainable diets, as well as increased attention to scaling up plant-based protein production. Additionally, stakeholders emphasized the challenge of translating research into market-ready solutions and called for better connections between R&I funding, pilot plants, and regulatory procedures to facilitate innovation and commercial deployment.
