Exposé of “Animal Slaughter” at Portuguese Farm That Raises Chickens Sold in Spain

ARDE, a Spanish association for animal rights and the environment, conducted an undercover investigation at a chicken farm in Coimbra, Portugal, that supplies chickens to supermarkets in Spain. The investigation revealed workers beating hundreds of chickens with sticks, resulting in severe injuries and death. The livestock farm, owned by Lusiaves, the largest chicken producer in Portugal, holds an animal welfare certificate, but serious irregularities have been reported.



ARDE and Frente Animal, a Portuguese NGO, have reported the abuse to authorities in Portugal and demand action be taken against those responsible. They urge Spanish supermarkets to stop misleading consumers about the welfare of animals in the meat industry. The case could involve alleged crimes of animal abuse under Portuguese law, and organizations are calling for a shift towards more plant-based options for the benefit of animals, human health, and the planet.
