Exposé of Caged Pigs at Kansas Farm Linked to Major Supermarket Chains

Animal Equality recently released an investigation that exposed a Kansas pig breeding facility connected to major US supermarket chains including Stop & Shop, Giant, and Food Lion. The investigation revealed disturbing scenes of cruelty, with pregnant pigs confined in metal gestation crates so small they couldn't even turn around for nearly four months at a time. The footage showed pigs with open wounds, dead piglets on faeces-covered floors, and animals displaying severe psychological distress.

Despite the widespread condemnation of gestation crates by experts as one of the cruelest forms of animal confinement, around 3.5 million mother pigs in the US are still kept in such conditions. Ahold Delhaize’s brands had pledged nearly a decade ago to ban gestation crates from their supply chain, but have delayed action until 2028, and the change will only apply to some products. Animal Equality's investigation shed light on the ongoing suffering of pigs in the meat industry, prompting calls for increased awareness and action to end such inhumane practices.
