Fava Tofu Fry Line and High-Protein Sourdough Among Nine Canadian Projects Funded to Replace Imports
Vegconomist • Oct 09, 2026
Protein Industries Canada has allocated C$1.3 million to nine Canadian food companies for projects aimed at reformulating or scaling products with Canadian-grown pulses, oats, and hemp. These projects, which total C$1.9 million with the companies' own contributions, are part of the Strengthening the Canadian Supply Chain program launched in response to trade tensions with the US. The funding will support initiatives such as developing a high-protein sourdough line, creating protein-rich dips, and replacing imported ingredients with Canadian alternatives.
Some of the projects include Big Mountain Foods installing a fry line to produce tofu cubes from Canadian fava beans, La Baguette developing ProFermented high-protein sourdough, and Nuts for Cheese creating high-protein dips from Canadian pulses. These initiatives aim to not only support local agriculture but also add to Canada's GDP and job creation. The fourth intake for the program is open until November 10, 2026, with the goal of further boosting the country's food production and value-added agriculture sector.
