Foodsteps & GFI Launch Automated Life Cycle Assessment Tool for Alt Proteins

Foodsteps, a UK startup, has partnered with the Good Food Institute to launch an automated life cycle assessment (LCA) tool for alternative protein products. This tool allows companies to easily assess the environmental impact of their products, from agricultural stage to factory gate. The software measures impact across five key areas, including greenhouse gas emissions and land use, helping businesses make credible claims about the sustainability of their alternative protein products.

Research shows that alternative proteins have a lower environmental impact than animal products, with significant reductions in land and water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and eutrophication potential. However, individual companies often struggle to prove the environmental credentials of their products without commissioning expensive full-scale LCAs. The new Foodsteps software provides a cost-effective solution for companies looking to avoid greenwashing claims and make informed decisions about the sustainability of their alternative protein products.
