Fur Production Has Plummeted To Lowest Level In Years

Global fur production has seen a significant decline, dropping 85 percent in the past decade according to data from Fur Free Alliance. This decrease, with production hitting its lowest point since 2010, is being attributed to a shift away from fur in the fashion industry and among consumers. In 2024 alone, production fell by 40 percent compared to the previous year, with China, the top fur producer, experiencing a more than 50 percent decrease in production between 2022 and 2023.

The decline in fur production has been linked to bans on fur farming introduced by several countries, as well as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which revealed the risks of zoonotic diseases associated with fur farms. Investigations into the cruel conditions of animals kept on fur farms have further highlighted the unethical nature of the industry, leading to more than 1,600 fashion brands committing to going fur-free. Despite progress, advocates continue to push for the complete eradication of fur production worldwide.
