Green REV Institute Files Complaint Against European Commission for Failure to Adopt Sustainable Food Systems Law

The Green REV Institute has filed a complaint against the European Commission for failing to adopt the Sustainable Food Systems Law (SFSL) as promised by the end of 2023. Despite over 90% of participants in public consultations declaring the current EU food system unsustainable, a draft law was never published. The initiative was removed from the 2024 legislative work programme without justification, leading to accusations of violations of transparency, civic participation obligations, and breach of earlier commitments.

The think tank demands the European Commission provide reasons for the delay and withdrawal of the SFSL, publish a new legislative work programme, release full consultation results, and engage in genuine dialogue with civil society. Without the SFSL, concerns remain about food quality, environmental protection, and support for farmers, with potential threats to human health, biodiversity, and the climate. The lack of transparency and disregard for public input have been condemned as a violation of fundamental EU principles that undermine trust in European institutions and pose a real threat to food security in Europe.
