Greener by Default has expanded its partnership with Sodexo to offer plant-based patient meals at all U.S. hospitals under Sodexo's management. The success of the program at NYC Health + Hospitals, where half of eligible patients chose plant-based menu items, has led to the planned transition of 200 more hospitals in 2025 and a total of 400 hospitals by 2026. The plant-forward menus provide nutritious, sustainable options as the default for one meal per day, while still offering a variety of protein choices.

Initial data from a Sodexo hospital already offering plant-based meals by default showed a 36% increase in plant-based entrees served, with a 20% decline in meat-based entrees chosen by patients. The goal is to shift 10% of the 290,000 meals served per day from meat-based to plant-based, potentially transitioning over 10 million meals per year. The collaboration between Greener by Default and Sodexo aims to promote plant-based dining in hospitals, improve health outcomes, reduce carbon emissions, and decrease food costs while maintaining diner satisfaction.
