The Hungarian parliament voted to ban the production and sale of cultivated meat products, with the motion receiving 140 votes in favor. The country has previously expressed concerns about cultivated meat, claiming it could be harmful to human health, the environment, and traditional rural lifestyles. However, research suggests that cultivated meat could have significant environmental benefits and provide opportunities for farmers, rather than posing a threat.

Italy also implemented a similar ban on cultivated meat in 2023, which was criticised by the European Commission for potentially violating EU procedures. Despite the bans, a survey commissioned by GFI Europe showed that the majority of respondents in 13 out of 15 countries in the EU support the introduction of cultivated meat products. The survey highlighted the importance of consumers being able to decide for themselves whether or not to consume cultivated meat, emphasizing the need for regulatory approval and consumer choice in the matter.
