After 11 successful years in business, beloved vegan spot Toad Style in Brooklyn was forced to close its doors due to a legal crisis with the building. A lawsuit filed in Kings County Supreme Court claims that the restaurant's use of the space as a restaurant was illegal, as the building's Certificate of Occupancy only approved it for use as a printing store. The closure was immediate, indefinite, and without notice, leaving owners Jillian Camera and Tyler Merfeld scrambling to provide staff with severance pay and cover closing costs and outstanding bills.

The community quickly rallied around Toad Style, with many devastated customers expressing their love and support for the restaurant. Despite the closure, Camera and Merfeld are not ruling out the possibility of Toad Style rising again in a new location or through pop-up opportunities. As they navigate the logistics of closing the current iteration of the restaurant and focus on running their vegan coffee shop, Familiars, the couple remains grateful for the outpouring of support and the memories shared with their customers over the years.
