Irish Govt Urged to Create National Plant-Based Food Fund in Budget 2027

The Vegan Society of Ireland is urging the national government to follow in Denmark's footsteps by creating a national plant-based action plan and fund in the 2027 budget. The proposed fund would help farmers transition into fruit and vegetable growing, as 83% of fruits and vegetables are currently imported into Ireland, with only a few commercial vegetable growers remaining in the country.

The society is calling for a fund of a similar scale to Denmark's, open to farmers, growers, and food businesses, as well as a commitment to publishing a national strategy for plant-based food. Public support for plant-based agriculture in Ireland is strong, with the majority of adults expressing a desire to eat more fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and believing that the country should prioritize healthy and sustainable diets.
