Kern Tec Responds to EU Tariffs on Us Almonds: “We Offer a Crisis-Proof Almond Alternative”

The EU has imposed a 25% counter-tariff on US almonds in response to tariffs on steel and aluminum imposed by the US. Kern Tec, a European company, offers an alternative to almonds in the form of nut products made from apricot kernels. These products are said to be very similar to almonds in appearance, taste, and nutritional profile, providing a crisis-proof option for European consumers.

Kern Tec's raw materials are currently used in the confectionery and baking industry, as well as in milk alternatives. The company believes that having alternative options like apricot kernels will help Europe prepare for global supply imbalances. Additionally, compared to almonds, apricot kernels cause fewer CO₂ emissions, require less water, and do not need additional land for cultivation, making them a more sustainable choice.
