A new study led by researchers from Tufts University’s Food is Medicine Institute has found that children and young people worldwide are not consuming enough nutritious, sustainable plant-based foods. The study, published in BMJ Global Health, analyzed the intake of plant-based foods among youth in 185 countries from 1990 to 2018, revealing inadequate consumption of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds.
The researchers highlighted the importance of establishing healthy dietary habits during childhood, as they can have a long-lasting impact on health. They emphasized that the lack of essential plant-based foods can negatively impact children's bodies and minds, affecting energy levels, metabolism, learning, and mood. The findings underscore the need to improve access to nutritious plant-based foods for children and adolescents globally to support their health and a sustainable food system.
