Tokyo-based food ingredients trader Lacto Japan has made an investment in New Zealand startup Leaft Foods, aiming to establish production and distribution channels for Rubisco protein in Japan. Rubisco protein is isolated from green leaves using Leaft Foods' proprietary extraction process, offering a complete essential amino acid profile and higher digestibility scores compared to conventional animal proteins.

Lacto Japan operates as an importer and wholesaler of dairy ingredients and functional food materials in Japan. The partnership with Leaft Foods allows for the distribution of Rubisco protein in Japan as an alternative to soy and pea protein, with a focus on sustainability and a 97% reduction in carbon emissions compared to animal-based proteins. This investment aligns with Lacto Japan's long-term positioning in the alternative protein market and aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two companies.
