Lambeth Becomes First London Borough to Endorse Global Plant Based Treaty

Lambeth has become the first London borough to endorse the global Plant Based Treaty, with a focus on cutting food-related emissions. The council aims to improve access to plant-based foods for residents, promote food security and better health, and reduce emissions. Measures include providing vouchers for fresh local produce to vulnerable households, promoting fruit and vegetable intake to children, and lowering meat consumption at council events.

The Plant Based Treaty has been endorsed by 120,000 individuals, five Nobel laureates, and over 3,000 organizations. Pressure is mounting on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to follow suit, as plant-based diets are seen as crucial in combating climate change. Calls have also been made for the UK as a whole to endorse the treaty, with a focus on revisiting the National Food Strategy to address food emissions.
