Lidl is calling on the UK government to implement mandatory plant-based targets as part of healthy food sales reporting to “level the playing field” for retailers. The supermarket has set a goal to have 25 percent of protein sales come from plant-based sources by 2030. Lidl has been publishing data on its protein sales since 2023, showing an increase from 14 percent to 18 percent in plant-based protein sales.

Lidl's annual sustainability report, "Beyond the Basket," showcases the supermarket's progress in promoting healthy and sustainable diets. The report highlights that 80 percent of Lidl's sales are from healthy food options and 98 percent of identified raw materials come from verified sustainable sources. Lidl aims to achieve 100 percent sustainable raw materials by 2026 and increase plant-based food sales by 20 percent by 2030 as part of its commitment to the EAT-Lancet Planetary Health Diet and becoming net-zero by 2050.
