Malaysian Animal Rights Activists Hold Candlelight Vigil for Kopi the Dog

Around 500 animal rights activists in Malaysia held a candlelight vigil at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur to remember Kopi, a dog killed in a stray-culling operation last year by the Besut municipal council in Terengganu. Organized by four organizations, including the Malaysian Animal Welfare Association and the Global Human Rights Federation, the event aimed to demand justice for Kopi's death and urge the government to adopt a more humane approach to stray animal control.


The activists also applied for an injunction to prevent the council from shooting more stray dogs pending the outcome of a lawsuit against them. This action reflects a national concern for animal rights, as authorities in Malaysia have faced criticism for their handling of animal welfare issues in the past, including protests against the culling of crocodiles and crows by wildlife departments. The vigil and legal actions taken by activists show a strong dedication to improving animal rights in Malaysia.
