MEPs With Agri-Food Financial Stakes Vote Against Environmental Rules, Study Finds

A study published in Food Policy found that members of the European Parliament with financial interests in the agri-food sector were three times more likely to vote against environmental protection measures than in favor. Analyzing 113 MEPs across 11 roll-call votes on four agri-environmental files, the research revealed that financial ties to the sector predicted the voting behavior, regardless of political affiliation. However, MEPs whose national party manifestos leaned towards environmental protection were more likely to support the reforms.

The study also highlighted the influence of Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (COMAGRI) control on the voting outcomes, with MEPs more likely to vote against environmental measures when the committee led the file. The authors stressed the need for tighter transparency and conflict-of-interest rules in EU agricultural governance to prevent sectoral interests from undermining policy reforms aimed at addressing climate and environmental challenges in the agri-food system.
