Miriam Margolyes Urges UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak To Ban Foie Gras

Miriam Margolyes and other celebrities have called on UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ban the production and import of foie gras due to its cruel practices of force-feeding ducks and geese. The open letter signed by Margolyes, model Twiggy, singer Alesha Dixon, and comedian Jo Brand describes foie gras as "abysmally cruel" and urges an end to the UK's involvement in the industry, despite the ban on production in the country since 2006.

Despite promises to explore a ban on foie gras imports as part of an animal welfare plan in 2020, it has been reported that the UK government has delayed or dropped proposals, with some Cabinet members citing concerns about limiting consumer choice. However, public opinion is strongly in favor of a ban, with 81 percent of UK citizens supporting it and 86 percent opposing the force-feeding of animals. Animal welfare organizations are calling for the government to prioritize legislation to end the importation of foie gras in the UK.
