Mosa Meat Requests First EU Market Authorisation for Cultivated Fat

Netherlands-based Mosa Meat has submitted a request for Novel Foods market approval in the EU for its cultivated fat ingredient, designed to be blended with plant-based ingredients to create beef-style products. This is a crucial step in introducing cultivated meat products to the European market, with regulatory approval needed for each cultivated ingredient individually.

The evaluation of Mosa Meat’s cultivated fat is expected to take around 18 months, following in the footsteps of Gourmey’s foie gras submission last year. Mosa Meat has already received high praise for its cultivated beef burger, with participants saying it tasted like meat and a 2-star Michelin chef lauding its flavor and mouthfeel. The company is dedicated to ensuring compliance with safety requirements and is optimistic about the potential for its innovative ingredient to enhance both cultivated meat products and plant-based alternatives.
