Nebraska Governor Takes Steps Towards Banning Cultivated Meat

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has taken steps towards banning cultivated meat in the state by signing an executive order limiting its sale. The order prohibits state agencies from purchasing cultivated meat products and requires businesses working with the state to favor "natural-meat producers" over cultivated meat producers. Additionally, new labeling regulations from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture will ensure that manufactured protein or cultivated meat products are clearly distinguished from meat sourced from animals.

Pillen, whose family runs pig farms, plans to introduce legislation in 2025 to completely ban the sale of cultivated meat in Nebraska. This move comes after Florida and Alabama passed laws banning the sale of cultivated meat in their states, demonstrating the influence of the meat industry in shaping legislation. Despite cultivated meat not yet being widely available in stores or restaurants, the industry faces opposition from traditional meat producers in states like Nebraska.
