New Report Uncovers ‘Willful Ignorance’ Of Animal Abuse In Leather Industry

A new report by Collective Fashion Justice and FOUR PAWS reveals the widespread animal abuse and cruelty present in the leather industry. The findings include lack of traceability in supply chains, inhumane practices such as mutilations and mistreatment of cows, and risks to animal welfare during transportation. Despite this, only 12 percent of fashion brands disclose where their raw materials are sourced, leading to a lack of guarantees in terms of animal welfare.

The report also highlights the fashion industry's 'ethics-washing' practices, where terms like "responsible" and "ethical" are used to describe leather goods, despite the reality of animal exploitation that goes unnoticed. Collective Fashion Justice is urging the industry to invest in research into leather alternatives and to address the ethical concerns surrounding leather production, calling for a shift beyond animal-derived materials for the sake of animals and the planet.
