New Vegan, Gluten-Free Ice Cream Shop to Open in Portland

Kate's Ice Cream is set to open a brick-and-mortar scoop shop in North Portland, offering a variety of vegan and gluten-free ice cream flavors with an array of toppings. The idea for the plant-based ice cream shop came about in 2014 when founder Kate Williams began experimenting with dairy-free desserts to accommodate her sister's dietary restrictions. After gaining popularity at farmer's markets and local delivery, the business quickly expanded, leading to the search for a permanent location.

The new store will feature organic coconut and cashew milk-based ice creams sweetened with coconut sugar and infused with locally sourced ingredients. Flavors include Marionberry Cobbler and Mint Chocolate Fudge, all created in collaboration with women- and minority-owned businesses. In addition to scoops, customers can look forward to a toppings bar and traditional and innovative cone options. The Kate's Ice Cream brick-and-mortar location is set to open on North Mississippi Avenue this fall, while pints are currently available at select retailers.
