New Vegan Vendor Opens at Brooklyn’s DeKalb Market

Kelewele, a new vegan vendor at Brooklyn’s DeKalb Market, offers plantain-based tacos, desserts, and more. Founder Rachel Laryea, a first-generation American of Ghanaian descent, uses plantains as a base for dishes like plantain tacos, brownies, cookies, and ice cream. Plantains are a staple in Laryea's family meals, and she continues to use them as an alternative to meat and dairy products, aligning with her vegan diet.

The menu at Kelewele includes munchies like spiced plantains and seasoned plantain balls, as well as big bites such as a plantain canoe filled with Ghanian bean stew and a sweet plantain and black bean burger. The sweets menu offers items like brownies, cookies, soft serve ice cream, and frozen roasted plantain pops. Located in DeKalb Market Hall in Brooklyn, Kelewele is a new, innovative addition to the plant-based food scene.
