New York City Expands Soy Milk Pilot in Schools After Cutting Food Emissions

New York City has successfully decreased its milk-related emissions in schools by 17% through a pilot program offering soy milk on the lunch line. The pilot, conducted in five schools, showed increased student choice, strong demand for plant-based alternatives, and a lower food climate footprint. This initiative was made possible by recent changes in federal law allowing schools to offer non-dairy milk to students without the need for a doctor's note.
The success of the soy milk pilot has led to its expansion to 12 schools this fall. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce food emissions in New York City, with the city government seeing a 36% decrease in overall food emissions and a 59% reduction in the carbon footprint of school meals between 2019 and 2025. By promoting plant-based options and reducing the consumption of dairy and meats, New York City is making significant strides towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly food system.
