Nutrition From Water Takes Equity Stake in Algarve Microalgae Firm PhycoFerm

New Zealand microalgae ingredients company Nutrition from Water (NXW) has taken an equity stake in Portuguese firm PhycoFerm, known for its strain development and biotechnology work in the Algarve region. The investment aims to accelerate NXW’s biological assets and consolidate PhycoFerm’s expertise in developing high-productivity, robust microalgae strains. Through this partnership, NXW can focus on process development and manufacturing while leveraging PhycoFerm’s specialization in strain improvement.

NXW has previously collaborated with partners such as packaging group SIG and Chinese fermentation group Jiangsu Jiangshan Pharmaceutical to bring its Marine Whey protein range to market. This investment in PhycoFerm adds another specialist partner to its cohort, aligning with the belief that microalgae offers efficient and complete nutrition for next-generation ingredients. This partnership further deepens NXW’s presence in the Algarve region and contributes to the area’s ambitions in marine biotechnology, positioning the region as a hub for Europe’s blue bioeconomy.
